RIP Bob Brozman

Internationally Beloved World Blues Musician, Bob Brozman, Passes Away at Age 59

foto-bobBob Brozman was a friend, an outstanding musician, and an amazing character. One of the sharpest and most critical brains I had the pleasure to have conversations with... He leaves a hole and we will miss him. Farewell Bob - wherever you are off to in your transition to your next existence. Much love - Thomas Ruf

Santa Cruz, California (April 25, 2013)   Bob Brozman was found dead at his home in Santa Cruz, CA in the evening of April 23, 2013.  Brozman, the steel-guitar innovator who got his start playing on the streets of Santa Cruz, died at age 59.
A legend in the world of blues and roots music, who integrated styles from around the world, Brozman was one of the world’s most beloved musical figures. His uniquely bold playing style and banter with the audience gave him the opportunity not just to entertain with his sharp wit, but also challenge core assumptions about the function of rhythm and sound.
“Bob is beloved to me, and to so many in so many countries,” says long-time friend and pianist, George Winston. “His legacy will live on and will no doubt become the standard-bearer to musical innovators for decades to come.”
Born in New York on March 8, 1954, Brozman was a world traveler who thrived on collaborating with the best musicians he could find from many different musical traditions. Known as the “King of the National Guitar,” his trademark guitar sound came from National steel guitars that he discovered at age 13.  He wrote “The History and Artistry of National Resonator Instruments,” and was the world authority on vintage and modern National Reso-Phonic guitars.
His body of recorded work spanned 30+ years.  His most recent release was last year’s Fire in the Mind.  Since his first solo album in 1981, Bob's repertoire of recordings has grown by over 30 titles to include 14 solo projects and at least a dozen collaborations with international friends. His ability to use the guitar as a portable translator of culture - coupled with his empathetic nature (through music, culture, and language) and seemingly boundless energy – enabled him to establish genuine musical friendships based on respect and love of music.
Bob is survived by his wife and partner of 15 years, Haley Robertson Brozman, brothers in NYC, and daughter Zoe Brozman, 20, along with a tremendous international community of friends and fans.  It is their desire to carry out Bob’s vision in the creation of a foundation, Global Music Aid, to help third-world musicians obtain instruments, strings, tuning gears, and basic recording equipment. Devon Allman: New video!

After releasing his first solo record „Turquoise“ on Ruf Records in February Devon Allman now also presents a music video of “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around”. This rock classic is a duet with label mate and Blues Music Award winner Samantha Fish, whose vocals are sassy and smart; melding with Devon’s strong rich voice. Directed by Mark Bergeron with Nate Tape as Director of Photography and Arthur Reed as producer, the three were able to use the city of New Orleans and all its romance to give the desperate song some vivid color. For the video shoot, they took to the streets of New Orleans, where the “romantic couple” are walking the streets trying to find each other. They filmed it at various points, the famous Chickie Wah Wah’s music club, a little streetcar riding and cameos were made by Royal Southern Brotherhood members, Cyril Neville and Charlie Wooton.

The Spin Doctors are back!

spin-doctorsYou think you know the Spin Doctors. Think again. When the legendary New York quartet release If The River Was Whiskey on May 06th through Ruf Records, casual fans will discover the secret past the hardcore have never forgotten.

To the wider world, the Doctors might be the multi-million-selling icons behind hits like Two Princes and Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong, not to mention the classic Pocket Full Of Kryptonite.

But in 2013, Chris Barron (vocals), Aaron Comess (drums), Eric Schenkman (guitar) and Mark White (bass) are reconnecting with the flat-broke twenty-somethings who scraped for dollars at the sharp end of the Big Apple blues circuit. The Spin Doctors have come full-circle.

Blues Caravan 2013: Tomorrow's Guitar Heroes

BC 2013During the past two years, the popular "Girls with Guitars Tour" put a thoroughly feminine stamp on the Blues Caravan. But it’s time to reshuffle the cards. On the latest edition of the annual tour presented by Ruf Records, a couple of rough-and-tumble guitarists from North America will go head-to-head with a dynamic British female singer and guitar player whose every show is a display of raw and emotional power. Rest assured: When this trio of hard-nosed pros step into the ring, they won’t be pulling any punches.

Jimmy Bowskill was discovered by renowned bluesman Jeff Healey at the tender age of eleven. The native of Canada has toured Europe several times and delivered a strong debut for Ruf Records with his 2012 release Back Number. While he started out as a fairly traditional blues stylist, he has since moved progressively toward classic rock. His trio has supported acts like Jeff Beck, Joe Bonamassa and Wishbone Ash to great accolades, but he no longer needs to ride on anyone’s coattails. "The music I make now has a more rocking sound than the more traditional stuff. But to me it’s just my take on the blues," explains Bowskill. "I’m in my early 20s and full of energy, so of course my music will have a different edge to it."
